That it is not a video game as we see video games. Yes in broad pointless technical terms anything that is game that has video can be qualified as a video game. But that is a pointless description as it tells you nothing except what is obvious. Anyone who follows this industry knows that the board game Scene It has no place in the video game industry, they are two different things. Same thing with Words with Friends and Draw It. Someone who just plays those games should not be included in a poll about the demographics of the video game industry, its a complete misrepresentation.

So Pong doesn't count as a videogame anymore?

What? I dont even understand where you are coming from with that? Pong is a game. You can play it alone, it has an AI opponent.

I cant play Words with friends alone, it is literally scrabble over the phone. Scrabble is a board game last time I checked.

Not backing down on this one. No amount of logic can change my opinion, as no amount of debate can make me stop lovin' my Yoda!

No, you are keeping him involved and stimulated!!  Keep it going.

Yoda is back!

I'm enjoying the discussion immensely.  Just one point (hope i'm not being overly pedantic).  Yoda, I don't know how valid it is to use Grimm Brothers stories (essentially 18th century stories or even older folk tales) as examples to prove a point at this stage (but I do understand that there's more recent Disney adaptations etc which are part of modern culture.

But even if we are to address this - there is a possible explanation (quoting from wikipedia):

Some critics such as Alistair Hauke, use Jungian analysis to say that the deaths of the brothers' father and grandfather are the reason for the Grimms' tendency to idealize and excuse fathers, as well as the predominance of female villains in the tales such as the wicked stepmothers, such as the evil stepmother and stepsisters in "Cinderella", but this disregards the fact that they were collectors, not authors of the tales.[28] Another possible influence can be found in the selection of stories such as "The Twelve Brothers", which mirrors the brothers' family structure of one girl and several brothers overcoming opposition.[29] Zipes believes that a number of the stories show autobiographical elements and that the brothers may have used their work as a "quest" to replace the family life they lost when their father died.

I don't know the Grimm originals well enough to make any comment on them.  References to Disney adaptations would be used merely as examples that exemplify something that should more obviously be agreed upon as negative so we can move onto more subtle shades of grey.  If I were looking to demonstrate modern pervasiveness by evidence, I'd opt to go with something a bit more modern than 1937.

Those are designed video games, with video game rules and gameplay. Someone had to design levels, weapons, attacks, I really don't have to explain to you why they are video games.

Words with friends is literally Scrabble. There is nothing else to it, there is no video game component. It is simply an electronic computer version of an old board game. Now we are entering the card game terriotory. Is Solitare a video game? Cause I don't think so. The only part of that which is video game like is the ending (which is awesome). If I see someone playing solitare I don't think "oh look they are playing a video game", I think they are playing an electronic version of a card game. Same with all the virtual poker sites, if you are simply playing virtual poker with other people, you are just playing a card game online, not a video game.

BUT if there is a game that has computer opponents, some type of fake in game currency, like a game that tries to simulate the casino experience that can be considered a video game. The game is you pretending to be in a casino. That is different than you simply playing cards with other people online. Another anology would be Chessmaster, thats a video game, it is a game designed to simulate playing chess but you are playing a computer. Its got tutorials and other video gamey stuff. Yahoo Chess is not, it's simply a way for two people to play chess online. Go to to Yahoo chess website, its called a board game not a video game.

Thats the way I see it. Again I understand that anything that can be interacted with on a video screen that can be qualified as a game can be technically called a video game, I am not arguing that. I am arguing that they are not really part of what is commonly known as "video games" and the gaming industry.
